I'm not just bashing boys here! A lot of female writers do the same things to male characters. By that I mean that 'occasionally' men tend to write women the way they see them. She manages to write female superheroes who are a tad more realistic than some of those written by her male counterparts. I guess I should explain that a bit, but let's start off with. Yeah, I liked Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain, but I wanted Barbara. So, the thought of the original Batgirl finally coming back made my inner geek do somersaults. Finally, the art was mediocre a lot of the time.Īll in all, it was as mentioned earlier, uninspired and the title got away with a lot of its flaws based on the reputation of Gail Simone.See, I'm one of those who has been rooting for someone to stick Barbara Gordon's ass in a Lazarus Pit for years.

The love interest in Ricky was terrible as he was clearly introduced to NOT be Barbara's love interest but became one anyway, though that's not entirely Gail's fault as another writer took over for a few issues and tried to create a romance between the two, but Gail still ran with it. As the series went on, Gail wanted to try and make the story have as many twists-and-turns as possible and after awhile, she jumped the shark and the 'aha' moments stopped making sense. That style would have been much better served for a 32-year old Barbara Gordon Batwoman comic. It was uninspired, dark, depressing with horror themes that were very similar to Scott Snyder's Batman and that's not what the moniker of 'Batgirl' is about. The biggest problem that I had with Gail Simone's Batgirl run was tonally, it was the complete opposite of what a 21-year old Barbara Gordon Batgirl book should be. I would give it a 5 and if it wasn't written by Gail Simone, it would have gotten a lot more criticism. Like Teen Titans, Batgirl has also been stopped and is heading in a new direction, so Batgirl (2014) will be voted on separately when a few more issues has been released. lets see who the best New 52 title really is.
